About this collection
HABS was created in 1933 as a New Deal make-work program for unemployed architects; the records are held jointly by NPS, LoC, and the American Institute of Architects. HAER added industrial and engineering sites in 1969. HALS added cultural landscapes in 2000. All documentation is in the public domain and is the single largest body of architectural documentation of historic structures in the United States. Source query at loc.gov →
